Virtual Therapy in Ohio: Online Counseling That Meets You Where You Are

We see it in our team and our clients. Folks all over are wanting to move more and be in-person again. Doing everything virtually has become so common place, and in many ways, an improvement in our daily lives; but it seems like we really miss actually being around people. Especially when it comes to something as intimate as therapy.

We’ll be honest, there are definitely things that are different in person. Little body movements and presentation that is maybe easier to see or observe when we’re not only getting a slightly fuzzy picture of your face. It’s hard to deny and energy and warmth that can fill a room when real connection is being created. And also, we have become really good at providing high quality therapy online. No, it’s not the same. But like you’ve likely adapted to how much of your job is online now, so have we.

While we love seeing you around our offices, at Wild Hope Therapy, virtual therapy has long since felt like compromising or a workaround. In fact, it has become one of the most meaningful ways we live out our commitment to making exceptional, affirming mental health care genuinely accessible. As a practice specializing in women's issues, perinatal mental health, neurodivergence, trauma, and LGBTQIA+ concerns, we know firsthand that the folks who most need specialized care are often the ones facing the greatest barriers to reaching it. Online therapy in Ohio is one of the most concrete ways we close that gap.

What Virtual Therapy Actually Looks Like

Online therapy (aka telehealth therapy, virtual counseling, online counseling or teletherapy) is just that, therapy conducted over a secure, HIPAA-compliant video platform. You join from wherever you are: your bedroom before the kids wake up, your car parked down the block, your home office with the door locked, or your couch with a blanket and a cup of tea. The session from there is basically the same. We might have to ask some different questions to get the information we need, we might have to troubleshoot technical issues or wait for a connection to come back for a second. But otherwise, your therapist is present and locked in the same as they would be in their office.

As licensed therapists in the state of Ohio, our clinicians can provide virtual therapy to clients anywhere in Ohio, not just near our physical offices in Columbus and Cleveland Heights. That means that wherever you are in the state, you can access therapists who specialize in exactly what you're navigating, So geography doesnt’ get to decide whether you get the right care.

Is Virtual Therapy Actually Effective?

Research shows that online therapy consistently produces outcomes comparable to in-person treatment for anxiety, depression, trauma, OCD, ADHD, and many other concerns. The therapeutic relationship is the strongest predictors of positive outcomes in therapy. We are just like you. We have had to adapt not just our work, but other relationships as well, to creating connections over our screens. And forming relationships fully and genuinely over video is just another one of the skills we now make sure to have in our toolbox.

And our therapists have invested real effort in developing specific skills and tools for making online sessions as meaningful and effective as in-person work. From adapting EMDR for the virtual space to building authentic connection and attunement over a screen, our team has made telehealth an area of genuine clinical investment.

Every therapist at Wild Hope Therapy is able to provide online therapy sessions to clients across Ohio. In fact, Phoenix Mussalow, Zara Geiger, Linda Freund, Felicity Lee  and Samantha Hoch provide all of their sessions virtually, with full flexibility for clients throughout the state. That means we have plenty of availability for you if you require online therapy. You can read about each therapist's background and specialties on our team page.

Who Virtual Therapy Opens Eliminates Barriers for Those Who Need Online Counseling the Most

When we think about accessibility at Wild Hope, we don't mean it as an abstract value. We mean asking, concretely: who has been kept out of mental health care, and what can we actually do about it? Virtual therapy is one of the most practical answers we've found.

Online Therapy for Neurodivergent Folks

For many people with ADHD, autism, or AuDHD, getting to a traditional therapy appointment involves a significant gauntlet of executive function and sensory demands: planning ahead, timing departures, navigating traffic, arriving somewhere unfamiliar, managing a waiting room, fluorescent lights, small talk. All of that before the therapeutic work even begins.

Virtual therapy removes most of those demands. Sessions happen in a familiar, often sensory-comfortable environment. There are fewer transitions. For many neurodivergent clients, telehealth goes beyond convenience and is genuinely more accessible, and in some cases makes it possible to actually show up for therapy in a way that in-person never quite allowed.

If you're searching for neurodivergent women's therapy online, an adult ADHD therapist for women online, or an online autism therapist for women in Ohio, our team includes therapists who specialize specifically in these experiences and provide all of their services via telehealth. You can read more on our ADHD and Autism specialty pages.

Online Therapy for New and Expecting Parents

The perinatal period is one of the times when mental health support matters most. And yet, it is also one of the times when getting to a therapy office feels impossible. Unpredictable nap schedules, feeding demands, childcare logistics, physical recovery, the fog of early parenthood, and potentially debilitating PMADs symptoms make this vulnerable time one of the most difficult to access support.

Virtual therapy provides a solution. A parent can log on during a nap window, in the early morning before a partner leaves, or during a feeding even, all without arranging childcare, commuting, or packing anything. For new parents navigating postpartum depression, anxiety, perinatal OCD, birth trauma, or the enormous adjustment of early parenthood, online perinatal mental health support is often the difference between getting help and not getting help at all.

Online Therapy for the LGBTQIA+ Community

Finding a therapist who is genuinely affirming, knowledgeable, engaged, and truly safe can feel difficult outside of city centers. Virtual therapy removes the geographic barrier between queer and trans clients and clinicians who are specifically trained in LGBTQIA+ concerns and who won’t require on-the-spot education.

This matters whether someone is navigating gender identity or a transition, processing the weight of family rejection or discrimination, managing the mental load of living in spaces that are not welcoming to them, processing cultural events that are triggering or scary, or simply wanting a therapist with whom you can just be yourself. Our virtual practice means a client anywhere in Ohio can access affirming, specialized care, not just the care that happens to be nearby.

Online Therapy for Trauma Survivors

Trauma can make the world feel smaller. For some survivors, leaving the house takes enormous effort. For others, certain environments, such as waiting rooms, clinical settings, or spaces where they feel less in control, can be activating in ways that make it difficult to be fully present for therapeutic work. And since trauma impacts executive functioning, energy levels, and motivation, those who have experienced trauma have many of the same barriers as folks who are neurodivergent when it comes to accessing care.

Virtual counseling can offer a sense of safety and control that in-person settings sometimes cannot, especially in the earlier stages of treatment. Our clinicians who specialize in trauma and complex PTSD are skilled at building genuine connection and doing meaningful work in the virtual space. If you're seeking online EMDR therapy in Ohio, virtual Cognitive Processing Therapy, complex PTSD therapy online, or trauma-informed online therapy, our team is equipped to support you from wherever you feel safest. Healing doesn't require you to be anywhere other than where you feel safe enough to begin.

Online Therapy for Anxiety

For many of our clients, especially women and folks who have spent years pushing through, performing, and managing their mental health from the outside in, the logistics of getting to a therapy office can feel like one more thing to hold together. If you're carrying a lot, if your schedule is demanding, if showing up somewhere new sounds like too much right now, or just the thought of cross referencing your insurance directory and online searches to find someone you can drive to: virtual therapy is a real and full-spectrum option. Not a lesser version. Just a more accessible one. And it allows for a great entryway into the treatment of anxiety, including celebrating the small steps of actually making the appointment and showing up, or developing distress tolerance little by little, like acknowledging the strength it takes just to join the virtual appointment. That might be homework enough right now, and that is absolutely ok. In fact, it’s the perfect starting place.

We love our local communities; and we’re thrilled that we can also reach yours

While we are proud to be part of the greater Columbus and Cleveland communities, virtual therapy means we are not limited to the neighborhoods around our two offices. Our therapists work with clients from across Ohio — Akron, Cincinnati, Toledo, Athens, Kent, Strongsville, rural corners of the state, and everywhere in between. We don’t even mind if you just don’t feel like driving across town!

If you're searching for virtual therapy in Columbus or virtual therapy in Cleveland and wondering whether someone who actually understands your specific experience is out there we want you to know we are ready to help you decide if we are that practice. And even if you're nowhere near either city, if you're in Ohio, we're here for you.

Virtual Therapy and Our Values

Offering virtual therapy is obviously a practical decision for us. When it started, none of us really had a choice, did we? But now it has become a concrete expression of who we are. Some of Wild Hope's core values is authenticity and inclusion : honoring each individual and creating a practice where everyone is genuinely welcome. When we look at the barriers that have historically kept people out of mental health care such as schedule flexibility, distance, disability, new parenthood, sensory overwhelm, the challenge of finding an affirming provider or even accessible providers at all, we see a gap between what people need and what has been made available to them.

Virtual counseling doesn't fix every barrier. It doesn't eliminate cost concerns, though we do accept most major insurance plans and offer sliding scale options. But it removes so many barriers, for so many people, that it feels like one of the most concrete things we can do to make the words "everyone is welcome here" actually true.

Commonly Asked Questions About Virtual Therapy

Is virtual therapy as effective as in-person?

Research consistently supports that telehealth produces comparable outcomes to in-person treatment for the vast majority of mental health concerns including: anxiety, depression, trauma, PMADs, postpartum depression and anxiety, and OCD. Many clients find that the comfort and familiarity of their own environment actually enhances their ability to be present and honest. Our therapists are all trained and experienced in delivering their specific modalities, including EMDR, DBT, ERP, ACT, and others, via telehealth.

Is it private and secure?

Yes. We use a HIPAA-compliant platform, and your sessions are completely private. We encourage you to think through your own setup. Things like a room with a closed door, headphones if you share space with others, etc. And we're happy to problem-solve with you if privacy at home is a concern.

What if I've never tried therapy before?

Starting is the hardest part, and that’s why we offer a free 15-minute consultation so you can get a sense of whether we feel like the right fit before committing to anything. You don't have to have the right words. We’ll ask the questions and get you paired up with the right online therapist for you.

Can I switch to in-person sessions later?

As long as your therapist has in-person sessions available, you can absolutely switch. Some clients begin virtually and transition to one of our offices in Columbus or Cleveland Heights when it makes sense. Others prefer virtual long-term. There's no wrong answer, and we'll work with you as your preferences and life circumstances evolve.

What if I live far from Columbus or Cleveland?

Then we are so happy you found us! If you're anywhere in Ohio and you've been wondering whether there's a practice that would genuinely understand your specific experience, we'd love to hear from you.
